For my final round up of inspirational women this black history month, I’m paying homage to the beautiful and mega talented Serena Williams. I don’t think there is a more perfect example of a black woman who has more confidence in abundance, and a winning record of achievements to boot.
I doubt there is any corner of the world left unbeknown to the incredible achievements of this superstar. She has been around since forever and still winning major grand slams.
I remember watching her play tournaments on television from a very young age. I was amazed that not one but two black sisters were making waves. Both Venus and Serena were tearing up the tennis game! As, a young girl, I remember watching them read their notes between games (thinking what are they reading) and whispering behind hands in their doubles games. The commentators talking about how unbelievably talented these two were. And I couldn’t have agreed more.
Fast forward 10 years and I’m still in awe. I’m amazed at how much she continues to grow and flourish. Today, I appreciate so much more about her than I ever thought I would. One of my favourite things is that I love about her today, is that she is so unapologectally and unreservedly herself. So comfortable in her skin. From her work ethic, to her fashion, to her highs and lows. Everything you see of her, is genuine.
She’s often been body shamed for being ‘thicker’ than the average tennis player. But if I’m honest, this makes me love her even more. I love that she surprises everyone by challenging the status quo. However, I don’t think her body should be such a big talking point. If we really think about it, is there another female champion who goes through the same body shame? But as a true champion would, she does not shy away and retire. She embraces her strength.
My favourite thing by far about her though is her confidence. You see that in her. In every aspect her being and in everything she does on and off the court. That to me is everything. It transcends everything and is truly beautiful.
